What to Expect at Your First Counseling Session at Thrive

October 06, 2026•6 min read

Your first counseling session is a conversation, not an evaluation you can fail. At Thrive Counseling Services in Dallas, your counselor will explain how counseling works, ask what brought you in, and listen. You share only what you are ready to share. By the end, you and your counselor will have a first sense of your goals and what comes next.

If you are reading this, you may be close to making the call, or you may have already made it. Either way, it is normal to feel nervous. Not knowing what to expect at a first counseling session is one of the most common reasons people put off getting help. So here is what actually happens, step by step, from the first phone call to the end of your first session.

Thrive Counseling Services is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing professional, faith-based Christian counseling in Dallas, Texas. We see individuals, couples, families, and children ages 5 through 17 at our two Dallas offices, on N Central Expressway and on N Buckner Blvd.

What happens before your first counseling session?

Your first step is reaching out by phone at (214) 233-6853 or through the contact form on our website. Someone from Thrive will talk with you briefly about what you are looking for and help you find a counselor and a time that fit. Appointments are available Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

This is also a good time to ask about cost. Counseling at Thrive costs $130 per session as of 2026, and every service is offered on a sliding scale based on family income. If you would like to apply for a reduced fee, we will explain the short application and the documentation it needs.

You can also tell us how you feel about faith in counseling. Some clients want a counselor trained to integrate a Biblical perspective. Others would rather faith stay in the background. Both are welcome here.

What should I bring to my first counseling appointment?

Like most counseling practices, Thrive has some intake paperwork, and we will let you know how to complete it when you schedule. Intake paperwork usually covers your contact information, a few questions about your health and history, and a consent form that explains how counseling works. You are always free to skip a question you are not ready to answer and talk it through with your counselor instead.

It can help to bring:

  • Any intake paperwork we asked you to bring

  • Income documentation, if you are applying for the sliding scale

  • A list of any medications you take

  • Your questions, written down if that helps you remember them

How does a first counseling session usually go?

An individual session at Thrive lasts about an hour, and most first sessions follow the same gentle shape. Your counselor leads, so you do not have to know what to say.

  1. How counseling works. Your counselor will explain what counseling at Thrive looks like and review the limits of confidentiality in plain words, so there are no surprises.

  2. What brought you in. You will be asked what is going on in your life right now and why you decided to reach out. There is no wrong answer. "I just feel stuck" is a perfectly good place to start.

  3. Some background, at your pace. Your counselor may ask about your family, your relationships, your health, and anything you have already tried. You decide how much to share.

  4. What you hope will change. Together you will begin to name a few goals. They do not need to be polished. They only need to be yours.

  5. What comes next. Before you leave, you will talk about how often to meet and what the next session might focus on.

The first session is also your chance to see whether this counselor is a good fit. A good fit matters. If it does not feel right, tell us, so we can talk about what would help.

Will I have to talk about my trauma in the first session?

No. You will never be pushed to tell your whole story in the first session. Thrive specializes in trauma-informed care, which starts from the understanding that healing requires safety first. Your counselor will work at your pace, and many people spend their first sessions simply building trust before they talk about the hardest things.

Will faith come up in my first counseling session?

Only if you want it to. You don't need to share our faith perspective to receive counseling at Thrive. Some clients want Scripture and prayer woven into their sessions, and others prefer that faith stay in the background entirely. You set that dial, and your counselor will respect it.

How will I feel after my first session?

Many people tell us the hardest part was making the call, and that the first session felt like relief. Others feel tired or tender afterward, because saying hard things out loud takes energy. Both are normal. One session will not resolve everything, but it is often the moment people realize they no longer have to carry it alone.
